Use and non-use values to explain farmers’ motivation for the provision of animal welfare

Abstract This paper examines how differences in motivation terms of use and non-use values affect the choice animal welfare improvement practices. The application is focused on Swedish dairy farmers’ preferences for different flooring systems’ attributes. Using multiple indicators causes hybrid latent class models, findings demonstrate that farmers who favour solutions enhance farm are motivated by a complex set both relating to internal external pressures linked freedom, ethical codes building business-to-customer relationships. imply measures stimulate more uptake practices can be better targeted using insights into motivational constructs adopting policy communication captures whole breadth held farmers.
